STUDIES LINK SOY TO DIGESTIVE DISTRESS

Many people come to me for colon hydrotherapy (colonics) with complaints of digestive distress. Most commonly this distress manifests with excessive gas and feelings of bloating. One of the first questions I ask them is whether they are eating soy products. Usually the answer is a resounding "YES!" with a feeling of satisfaction that they are nourishing themselves with the ample protein that their bodies require. When these same people go on a 30-day abstinence from soy trial, they report that their gas and bloating has miraculously subsided. Hmmm...

Americans rarely hear anything negative about soy. Thanks to the shrewd public relations campaigns waged by Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), Protein Technologies International (PTI), the American Soybean Association, and other soy interests, as well as the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) 1999 approval of the health claim that soy protein lowers cholesterol, soy maintains a "healthy" image. When Costco started selling soy milk by the case, I became suspect.

Many respected scientists have issued warnings stating that the possible benefits of eating soy should be weighed against the proven risks. Indeed, thousands of studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, immune-system breakdown, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders and infertility-even cancer and heart disease.

It is interesting to note that soy is suspect in other countries, as well. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, the Israeli Health Ministry, the French Food Agency and UK officials now warn against the dangers of soy infant formula and other soy products. The French Food Agency (AFSSA) has announced tough new regulations that will require manufacturers to put warning labels on packages of soy foods and soy milk.
