TEN REASONS TO GET A COLONIC

  1. Internal poisons can cause wrinkles, blemishes, psoriasis, eczema and liver spots.
  2. Impacted waste disturbs mental function and hastens dementia.
  3. A toxic colon can cause acidosis, bloating and yeast infections.
  4. Decreased bowel activity can cause foul breath and bad teeth.
  5. An unhealthy colon can be related to arthritis and joint pain.
  6. A congested lower bowel can cause back pain, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis and diverticulitis.
  7. An inactive colon can cause weight gain and slow weight loss.
  8. Toxins, such as phenol, ammonia, indol, scatole, cresol, cadaverin, botulin, butyric acid, neurin, sepsin, and many other highly active poisons, found in a low functioning colon, can increase the risk of cancer by at least 75%.
  9. Waste in the colon putrefies, creates gas, and slows elimination.
  10. A toxic bowel can weaken and cause stress to the heart.

Twins & Mediterranean Diet Research

The following is an article from the "World's Healthiest Foods" website:
A Mediterranean Diet Passes the Twin Test
In the world of research there has always been a special place for studies involving twins. The special nature of twin studies involves an ability to determine the role of genetics. If genetics overshadow other factors, identical twins should have similar results in a research study since they share the same genes. If other factors are less important than genetics, identical twins should show different results.

Researchers based at the Emory University School of Medicine put the Mediterranean diet up against this twin test by selecting almost 300 twins and measuring their adherence to this way of eating. As a primary research question, they asked whether it would matter how closely each twin followed the Mediterranean diet: Would their health be the same because they were twins, or would the Mediterranean diet be more powerful than their genetics?

As a measurement of health, the researchers chose blood levels of glutathione, a key antioxidant nutrient. Glutathione is a well-researched marker for levels of oxidative stress in the body. Oxidative stress simply means lack of protection in the body from damage to cells and tissue by certain kinds of oxygen-containing molecules. As a primary antioxidant, glutathione helps protect against oxidative stress. (In this study, glutathione was measured in a ratio called GSH/GSSG, comparing the amount of reduced to oxidized glutathione.)

Twins were found to differ in their levels of oxidative stress, and these differences matched up well with a twin's level of adherence to the Mediterranean diet. When one twin stepped up his or her adherence to the Mediterranean diet (in comparison to the other twin) by eating a modestly higher amount of appropriate foods, his or her glutathione score went up by an average of 10%. In other words, the Mediterranean diet passed the twin test! It seems that genetic inheritance was not strong enough to overshadow the health benefits of a Mediterranean way of eating.

It's not surprising to us that a Mediterranean diet was associated with less oxidative stress in this twin study. It's hard to image a selection of foods richer in antioxidants, including the wealth of flavonoids and carotenoids found in the fruits and vegetables that are at the foundation of a Mediterranean-style eating plan. It's the same antioxidant richness that you will find in the World's Healthiest Foods and the Healthiest Way of Eating.

Alkalize Or Die!

Alkalize Or Die is the dramatic title of an interesting book by Theodore Baroody (see Amazon's description and reviews here). The concept of "alkalizing" the body is becoming a popular notion in alternative medicine.

Russell Jaffe, MD, PhD, is a noted physician, researcher, and lecturer and, with Dr. Baroody, is also an outspoken proponent of keeping the body alkaline. With the typical American diet, there is an excess of acid produced in the body tissues when the food is assimilated. According to many experts, this acidic condition of the body is linked with fatigue, illness and pain. Some are convinced that nearly all illnesses are at least partly related to an acidic condition. The body tissues are meant to work best within a narrow, slightly alkaline range (pH7.35-7.55).

Click here to learn more about Dr. Russell Jaffe. According to Dr. Jaffe, and numerous other researchers and physicians, excess acidity in the system can stem from:

  • Stress
  • Acid-forming diet
  • Toxins (or other metabolites that are toxic)
  • Immune reactions

Alkalizing the body can be accomplished by following a program based on foods that are primarily alkaline forming. Good books on this topic are Alkalize or Die by Theodore Baroody and The pH Miracle by Robert O. Young.

My health minded dentist, Dr. Larry Bowden, speaks often of the significant role played by acid/alkaline balance in the body. Dr. Bowden uses high quality, bio-compatible dental materials. Click here to learn more about Dr. Bowden's dental practice in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

"Jus" is highly alkalizing. "Jus" is a promising new drink, formulated with 23 high antioxidant fruit and herbs. "Jus"makes it easy to increase the body's alkalinity. I am very grateful to drink my daily 1 or 2 ounces of "Jus" because it promotes an increasing sense of well-being and energy. "Jus" is the highest quality, and the best value, of all the antioxidant drinks available on the market.

Why Do Beans Cause Flatulence?

"Flatulence (intestinal gas) is usually the result of many combined factors-not simply a food all by itself.

Yet, sometimes flatulence can be the result of a food that is mismatched for our metabolism. Gas resulting from the lactose in cow's milk would be a good example in this category. Some individuals cannot break down milk sugar (lactose) very effectively because their bodies do not contain sufficient quantities of the enzyme, lactase, which is needed to break down milk sugar. Instead of being enzymatically broken down into simpler sugars (glucose and galactose) and then absorbed, milk sugar may end up passing most of the way through the intestine until bacteria in the lower intestine break it down. But those bacteria do not break down milk sugar into glucose and galactose. Instead, they break it down even further into gases (like carbon dioxide) and water. The result is intestinal gas.

Beans and other high-fiber foods can work in this exact same way in some individuals. Fibers in food aren't easily broken down in the digestive tract. Under certain circumstances, high-fiber foods end up undergoing extensive breakdown by bacteria lower down in our digestive tract (mostly in the large intestine), and the result, once again, is intestinal gas. Oligosaccharides form part of the digestion-resistant substances in beans, and for this reason they can be a source of potential intestinal gas.

Soaking beans before cooking them can help to reduce the oligosaccharide levels of beans. I also recommend draining your soaked beans, discarding the soaking water, and then refilling your pot with fresh water before cooking. If you are eating canned beans, I would suggest rinsing them well before consuming or cooking them.

There is anecdotal evidence that cooking beans with kombu (a type of sea vegetable) and plenty of spices can also improve the digestibility of beans. Adding kombu to your beans will also increase their nutritional value by adding trace minerals to your dish. Cumin, fennel, and ginger are among the spices that are especially effective in preventing the formation of gas, but any of your favorite aromatic spices will help by inhibiting bacteria and stimulating digestion. Also, products like Beano (TM) have been found to help many people by reducing the formation of the intestinal gas that they experience." ~George Mateljan

Dr. Bernard Jensen says "Colon Cleanse"

A clean and properly functioning bowel is paramount to our well being. Dr. Bernard Jensen, nutritionist, lecturer and author of over 30 books on natural health care, states:

"Every cell and tissue in the body is fed by the bloodstream, which is supplied by the bowel. When the bowel is dirty, the blood is dirty and so are the organs and tissues. It is the bowel that must be cared for first before any effective healing can take place."

"In a world where dietary choices are poor, environmental pollution is heavy, stress levels are high, and exercise is often a last priority, internal cleansing is more important than ever for optimum health." ~ Dr. Bernard Jensen

A pioneer in the field of natural medicine and nutrition for over 60 years, Dr. Bernard Jensen is one of my heroes and mentors. I was fortunate to study with him at his Hidden Valley Health Ranch in Escondido, California just after my colonic therapy training in 1980. In his healing work with over 350,000 people, Dr. Jensen repeatedly proved that nutrition is the greatest remedy in overcoming and preventing disease states. His famous book, Tissue Cleansing Through Bowel Management was originally published in 1976. It was the first book that I read on colon cleansing.

What Is That Rumbly In Your Tumbly??

GOT GAS? It can be a REAL pain, literally!

Winnie the Pooh aptly describes his hunger pains with the familiar and lovable words, "I'm rumbly in my tumbly!" Perhaps we might just as aptly describe a familiar, but not so lovable, "growly in my bowely!"

When my colonic clients complain to me of gas problems, they always want to know where it comes from. One word defines this uncomfortable nuisance: Putrefaction.

These are some common causes of excessive gas production in the bowel:

  • Constipation or slow transit resulting in the over-accumulation of waste;
  • Inability to break down complex sugars and starches;
  • Insufficient exercise which slows peristalsis and circulation;
  • Improper food combining i.e. complex carbohydrates with heavy proteins;
  • Endocrine imbalance, resulting in insufficient digestive secretions from the liver, gall bladder, pancreas, stomach and small intestines;
  • Lactose intolerance or the inability to digest milk based sugars;
  • Overeating

NOTE: Colon Hydrotherapist Shiela Shea's Suggestions for Alleviating Gas

  • Use herbs, digestive enzymes, or charcoal. Remember charcoal or bentonite will also pull out the good metals and minerals so use with discretion. If used over time, supplement with rich minerals from ocean and lake algae, and land grasses like wheat and barley;
  • Exercise with yoga, swimming, and walking;
  • Practice breathing exercises;
  • Meditate;
  • Massage the abdomen;
  • Take enemas, Ayurvedic bastis and/or colon hydrotherapy treatments;
  • FAST: One of Ghandi's dietary rules is to abstain from eating when in pain;
  • Take a hot bath;
  • Avoid complex sugars and starches.

Amazing Health Benefits of Brussel Sprouts

Did you know that the phytonutrients found in cruciferous vegetables, such as Brussel Sprouts cabbage, broccoli, and kale, actually signal our genes to increase production of enzymes involved in detoxification? For about 20 years, we've known that many phytonutrients work as antioxidants to disarm free radicals before they can damage DNA, cell membranes and fat-containing molecules such as cholesterol. Now, research is revealing that phytonutrients in cruciferous vegetables, like Brussels sprouts, work at a much deeper level. The phytonutrients in crucifers initiate an intricate dance inside our cells in which gene response elements direct and balance the steps among dozens of detoxification enzyme partners, each performing its own protective role in perfect balance with the other dancers. The natural synergy that results optimizes our cells' ability to disarm and clear free radicals and toxins, including potential carcinogens— one reason why cruciferous vegetables appear to lower our risk of cancer more effectively than any other vegetables or fruits. So, while Brussels sprouts may be miniature in size, they are giants when it comes to helping to protect cellular structures and DNA from the damage caused by free radicals. Click HERE for detailed info on phytonutrients in Brussel Sprouts.

The Intestines: Your Body's Second Brain

Dr Joseph Mercola reminds us:

"A well-functioning intestine equals an effective immune system, enabling you to live optimally and with pep.

Eighty percent of your immune system is in the intestines. Plus, it's the nutritional uptake center of your body. Keeping it healthy will keep you healthy!

Your intestinal nervous system contains just as many neurons as the nervous system in the spinal cord. Because it uses these to communicate with the cells in your body, some people call it your "body's second brain". It truly has great impact on how the rest of your body functions.

The process of digestion involves performing 28,000 different chemical reactions -- making it critically important for you to support your intestinal health and help it usher toxins out of your system."

Colon Cleansing for the ADD/ADHD Child

Colonics can be valuable in helping children get better!

Some of my favorite colonic clients are children whose parents are dedicated to using natural treatments in their health care. Many of these children are plagued with attention and hyperactivity challenges. Read this article written by a Colon Hydrotherapist who discusses the value of colon cleansing in ADD and ADHD. High antioxidant intake is important in managing the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. "Jus" is an efficient way for children to consume easily absorbed antioxidants in a pleasant tasting juice. Read about "Jus" in my blog archives.

Colon Hydrotherapy sessions are available by appointment at Oasis Colonics located in a shared facility with Crescent Moon Oasis Massage and Wellness in Southeast Portland, Oregon. Many people like to schedule a relaxing massage and steam to get the toxic lymph flowing before they have their colonic.

"Jus" ~ Best Healthy Antioxidant Juice

Are you acquainted with health promoting antioxidant juices? I'm talking about drinks like Noni, Mangosteen, Acai, Blueberry, Goji, Pomegranate and Kombucha. I've discovered the best antioxidant drink available on the market. It's called "Jus". Jus is the combination of 23 fruits and herbs, and what makes it unique is the synergistic formulation. Jus is a great value too! This is one of the reasons that I am excited about it; and this is why Jus is quickly becoming a very sought after product. At 1 oz per serving, the cost breaks down to about $1.75 per day with shipping, when it is purchased wholesale, although it is available at retail cost, as well. Jus is not sold in retail outlets because it has a direct marketing distribution.

There is mounting evidence for the value of increased antioxidant intake. This is not a new phenomenon. When I worked as a manager at The Vitamin Shoppe, I observed that a variety of antioxidant supplements were among our biggest sellers; many of which cost more than $50 for a month's supply. I have spent way more than $1.75 per day on my antioxidant supplemental intake over the years.

More recently, it is becoming apparent that consuming antioxidants within whole food optimizes the bio-availability of the molecules. This is why antioxidant juice drinks are becoming popular, and are being heavily marketed. You can now buy huge bottles of Pomegranate concentrate at Costco! One of the things that I find impressive about Jus is the amount of antioxidants per ounce that are readily absorbed. The laboratory tests for antioxidant bio-availability in Jus rate highest among all quality antioxidant food drinks available. The reason for this is in the formulation. It is the synergistic combination of the fruits that increase the bio-availability of the antioxidant molecules. You can research the ORAC scores (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), and compare.

I have friends, clients and acquaintances right here in Portland, Oregon who have experienced dramatic results after just a few days to a few months of drinking Jus. I've been told by people that I know personally (and their family members and friends) about a variety of conditions that have healed, or greatly improved, by drinking a daily ounce of Jus. The improvements that I've been told about include asthma, diabetes Type 1 and Type 2, cancer, migraines, ADD/AHDD, allergies, arthritis, nicotine addiction, insomnia, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and even the large skin cancer of my friend's son is resolving. Click on the links to see studies and articles about the benefits of antioxidants in those particular conditions. I learned about an acquaintance of mine's elderly mother whose dementia has markedly improved. I spoke to a woman whose medical doctor is impressed with the improvement in her lifelong heart condition. She has taken the Jus daily for 5 months, and sees her doctor every month for a routine check. He is telling her to keep doing what's she's doing, and is very interested in this juice. To top it off, all report a marked sense of well-being.

I don't mean to tout this as a hyped-up "cure-all". But, I am excited about it's potential. I've been keeping my eye on this product, and company, for exactly one year since I discovered it at a health expo at the Portland Convention Center last Fall. Jus International is a new company. Based out of Idaho, and now in Washington and Oregon, it is in it's infancy. The company formally launched in the U.S. last September. It is also growing in Japan. There is huge potential for expansion, and I am grateful for the opportunity to get involved now. You know that being in my field of work, I am familiar with hundreds of health products, and I rank this very high!

As you can see in the links above, high antioxidant intake is fast becoming known in heath and medical circles as a key in the prevention and healing of many ills. The word "antioxidant" is now used in advertising as a buzz word that tells people that they should buy it, in much the same way as "no cholesterol", "sugar-free", "natural" or "low-carb" is now touted. You've heard the term "free radical", right? Free radicals are molecules that greatly accelerate aging. Antioxidants in fresh fruits and vegetables scavenge free radicals which are caused by the daily insults that our bodies are continually subjected to in our toxic world. Highly acid forming foods and rancid oils is a major one. We have a "better shot at long-term health if our body's pH is neutral or slightly alkaline." Air pollution, synthetic chemicals in our body care products, even stress, not-to-mention sugar and processed, denatured foods which disturb the pH balance in our bloodstream all play havoc in our bodies. There is much discussion among health practitioners on the topic of acid/alkaline balance. There are lots of studies worldwide dedicated to the research of acidosis, and it's effect on chronic disease. This "Jus" is highly alkalizing.

I expect to receive my initial purchase of Jus tomorrow. I chose the most economical option by ordering 3 bottles at wholesale cost. Becoming an annual member will save more money in the long run. I'll keep you posted! By the way, the company will refund the cost of up to 3 bottles after 3 months if a person is not satisfied, for any reason! I learned that, as of 3 weeks ago, there has not been one person to request a refund since Jus has been in distribution. That speaks!

I've gone above and beyond in offering LOTS of information via the links above. Investigate!

Colon Hydrotherapy Explained

COLON HYDROTHERAPY EXPLAINED

Oasis Colonics in Portland, Oregon
uses state-of-the-art, sanitary, closed-system colon hydrotherapy equipment with a triple filtered water filtration system, including ultra-violet light. It is designed to meet the highest industry safety standards.

This safe, gentle and effective procedure is becoming increasingly popular among people who want to reclaim their health, and prevent premature aging and disease. At Oasis Colonics, many first time colon hydrotherapy clients often ask similar questions. Below are a few examples.

~~How long does it take? ~~
At Oasis Colonics, we allow one and a half hours for each session. You will be on the table for approximately 45 to 60 minutes.

~~Is it uncomfortable? ~~
A colonic should NEVER be uncomfortable. At Oasis Colonics, most clients find the experience quite pleasant once they become accustomed to it.

~~Do I have to fast before a colonic? ~~
At Oasis Colonics, fasting is not a requirement. For maximum comfort, however, we recommend that your stomach is fairly empty when you come in for your session. Eat lightly during the day of your session, and, refrain from eating or drinking for two hours before your session.

~~Can I eat afterward? ~~
Yes, you can.

~~Are there restrictions on activities after a colonic? ~~
At Oasis Colonics, we encourage you to listen to your body after your session. Usually it's best to rest a bit after a colonic, if possible, to give your colon time to settle down. If you feel tired, rest and drink a lot of purified water. If you are energized, drink a lot of purified water and enjoy your feeling of lightness and clarity.

~~How will I feel after a colonic? ~~
At Oasis Colonics, some clients feel fatigued after a session. Other clients feel quite energized. If you feel tired or achy, it is because your body is still detoxifying. Drink a lot of purified water and rest. You will, most likely, feel quite renewed.

~~I've heard that getting a colonic depletes the body of necessary bacteria. Is this true? ~~
This idea is based on inaccurate information. The fact is that both friendly bacteria (probiotics) and unfriendly bacteria (harmful, toxic bacteria, fungi and viruses) dwell in the gut. These "flora" reproduce more efficiently in a clean environment. A colonic will not deplete the friendly flora. Conversely, the unfriendly bacteria thrive in a dirty environment. It is the unfriendly bacteria that can cause all kinds of health issues.

~~Having a colonic sounds like a very embarrassing procedure to me... ~~
It is the fear of embarrassment that is worse than any actual embarrassment. At Oasis Colonics, your comfort is very important. We will help ease any trepidation on your first visit by education and a gentle manner.

~~How do I know if I have toxins and encrusted feces in my colon? ~~
Symptoms of toxicity can include chronic constipation or diarrhea, fatigue, depression, headaches, skin blemishes, bad breath, weight issues, lack of vitality and several others.

~~How many sessions will I need? ~~
At Oasis Colonics, we recognize that each person is unique. Generally, a series of three to six colonics is adequate for a thorough initial cleansing. Additional colonics may be useful to tone up a lazy colon for someone who has a bowel condition such as constipation or excessive bloating, or who is in the process of healing a chronic disease. Treatments are administered by a skilled colon hydrotherapist who has over 25 years of experience in this field.
